    Friday

Cool Good morning! It's about 9:20 in the a.m., a bright sunny day out there. I'm still waking up. Rested but groggy. I am a slow starter playing solos(like Paul Gonzalves, my best chorus is usually the 14th or 15th), and I'm a slow starter waking up in the morning.
Music news. About 45 years ago, at the ripe old age of 18, I was just getting into writing music. Loved music with all my heart(and still do), but wasn't sure I wanted to be a performer. The more secluded life of the composer appealed to me. Just as some actors want to be directors. Behind the camera as opposed to being in front of it.
It was about then that a new friend of mine- Dirk Keefner- commented that he found me more optimistic, more positive when I was writing a lot; and more cynical when I was playing a lot of gigs.
Cut to the present, and another relatively new friend. Same message, basically: you should be writing, because that's where your real gift lies.
Of the various things musical I've done over these many years, I'd have to say that composition is the most fulfilling. The most cathartic, at any rate. There is a high, though, to playing- particularly when you're improvising- when everything is working and grooving. And a degree of catharsis as well.
I am an ambivert by nature(in between an extrovert and introvert), and enjoy working with other people- for awhile. Then I need to get the hell away from them and just work solo in my music "laboratory"(I just realized that someone could satirize this by calling it my music lavatory). So I come by it naturally..
So I'd like to have a project or two going. Haven't written in some time, and it's like I have to find a way to re-open that door. To use an old bromide, where there's a will, there's a way.
I love to play, and will continue to work on better technique. But I do need to express myself through writing. So I'll have to do some double-duty here. Just gotta get that door re-opened.
Okay, I guess this is my soapbox for the day. Thanks for wading through, whoever-is-still-reading-this. Happy Friday to you, tgif if it applies. Je suis outa here. More later.
