old and tired on friday
Rehearsal ended up being a lot more fun than I'd anticipated. So I'm eagerly anticipating the gig on Saturday. It's just two hours(optimal for us oldsters), and we get fed afterwards. Can't beat it.
Couldn't seem to get to sleep last night. Finally drifted off at 3 something in the morning, maybe bagged 6 hours of actual slumber. It happens. Fortunately not that often.
Found a cool documentary on Netflix about the life and times of Lee Morgan. Much of the story is told by his widow, decades after serving a prison term for shooting him(!). Wayne Shorter(an early bandmate from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers),, Bennie Maupin and many others are in the film, giving their accounts.
I'm about halfway into it. Of course it's leading up to that fateful gig where she shoots him. That story has probably made it to every jazz musician in the country. I Called Him Morgan is the title.
Well I guess that's all the news I've got for now. Feeling okay. As long as most of your nights are good, you can handle the occasional sleepless night. This is one thing I learned from tackling this problem.
As ever, thanks for reading, whoever-reads-this. Happy Friday, especially to those still in the workforce. More later.
