Sam, Lar the bear here. Remember me? Let's see, I Josh through John kevern (IC) also used to hang with Mike getz, John Sluzalis,(roommates with both) Flock of Tooters, Food and Money Bill Jansen and the local music scene , I worked at Apple tree records with John Novak-then the Fafoglias.Nice site.Hey, I stumbled across an amazing young female jazz vocalist, A guy I work with took her under his wings and is trying to set her up in the local scene. I told him I would help out with some old contacts. She already is getting a following, played to a full house at Marleys w/Frank Trompeter Quartet last Sat. I thought maybe you would be interested with possibly working with her or maybe pointing her in the right direction. She is very young (but very naturally good)but a good naive churchgoing girl and family. her name is Becca. Honestly I haven't heard her yet but heard from people in the know, she has GREAT potential. (Think meal ticket-LOL). Anyway I might be getting in touch to let you know when she sings next and I would like your opinion. I sent this link to my friend Bob Sharpe that is helping/managing her and if you don't mind, have him contact you. I'm just doing my small part of linking like minded jazz enthusiasts together. Thanks for listening and hope to see you soon. Lar

Maybe some people look forward to reading your news everyday...and are disappoined when nothing new is there. Maybe it's a sexual thing or just a nice relaxing and entertaining information.

Hey I like your photogs and layouts. I'll have to listen to your strums sometime. For now, I'm just browsing.

Ron Stone - Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 10:17 PM
Hi Sam,

Love your site. Great job on the design!

Well, if Colby Cheese and George Carlin are listed among your favorites, you have my vote!

I saw you in Springfield at the Wooden Nickel as well as with the Jane Hartman Trio during the 80's and early 90's. Some other places I am sure...I just don't remember. I thought you were great.

I am a bad guitar wanna be who took lessons from Anton (Ted) Davis, Mark Tomeo and Mike Taylor in Springfield. I now live in Arizona.

Mike Taylor still owes me $700 for loaning him $1000 for his trip to somewhere to become a record producer and make millions. Ain't it great.

Anyway...thanks for the memories and here is wishing the best to you and all of yours!

Sam, I wanted to let you know how much we have enjoyed this CD. My son and his pals used to jump in the car and blast my head off with the gansta' rap stations. Now, the first thing he does is plug in your new CD. Picture this... There I am on a late Saturday afternoon, cruisin' Sunset Strip in my 4Runner filled with pre-teen, super-jocks. Windows down, sun roof open, FFA crankin' out for all to hear. We pass by the old Whiskey A-Go Go where clusters of Gothic youth are huddled enmass. All their ears perk as Scraintunes waft over this hub of the LA music scene like a great satin cloak. They are uniformed in black leather, tattoos, body piercings, and multi-colored hair. The ocean breeze ruffles gleeming mohawks that appear like ancient Roman war bonnets. Even though the sun has not set, the Goths have obviously been out chasing rabbits, ever searching for the elusive, hookah smoking caterpillar. Slowly they turn a dull and lifeless eye as the boring, Toyota family car passes by. They spot the scrubbed young faces of middle schoolers poked out of all openings, waving and repeating the words of the song, "Thank you, thank you thank you". The pastey white faces on the street betray an expression that suggests, "What dorks these mortals be? But still, they listen to such fine music. How could this be?" Soon they all nod in agreement as if to say to us, "Yes, uncool ones, it is true. The work-a-day world must go on." I also want to say thanks because now that Cameron isn't listening to rap so much, I've been able to cut back on my drinking, that nervous tic is almost gone, and I no longer grind my teeth at night. I thank you and my dentist thanks you. Churn 'em and burn 'em, mi compadre!

Sam I just wrote a review of Bird's Eye View for your CD BABY site and I accidentally said Maxine was one of my favorites even though I meant to say Trail Of Suds. Of course it's too late to change it now unless I write another whole review under some clever alias but, alas, I will not leave a Trail of Lies to deny Maxine her place ahead of Trail of Suds, or something. We live on a fragile continuum of constant confusion, anyway, so I'll leave it all up to chance to fix my little blunders and bring blessings to your CD sales. Bye for now, old pal.

Hey, thanks for signing my guestbook! (geocities.com/martinmact)... For anyone screwed-up enough to make my webpage (ie: me), it's very reassuring to know there is someone screwed-up enough to find a way to find it! It's also reassuring to know that even some of the screwed-up-like-that people out there are kind anyway. Moreover, I'd always wondered where in the US springfield was (the Simpsons) and now I know: Illinois... Next I'll figure out where Illionois is... I think it's in "the South"; I've heard that's where people think a "yank" comes from North of the "Mason Dixie Line" (whatever that is) as opposed to South of the 49th parallel. I'm gonna listen to your music now. No offense, but if you use the words "Baby one more time" I'm gonna get creeped out.

James Isley - Monday, April 18th, 2005 7:49 PM
Hey Little Hawk. Just stopped by to see what was cookin'. Listened to the songs on the new CD; Birds-Eye View. Very nice but couldn't get 'One for Dad' to play. So I'll just have to get the CD!

Sam, I may be busy on the 4-1-05 date. I am thinking about having a party as I am off work on my 40th b'day on Saturday 8-6-05. What would it cost to have you put together a quartet to play for me at my house like 6:30-dusk or so? Are you free on that date? Could you come over and scope out where you could set up sometime? I've never had a party and we've been in this house over 6 years now. Thanks, Bret.

"Do-Wah-Diddy-Diddy-Dum-Diddy-Do" is a direct piratization of a lyric I wrote for one of my songs...Refer to my version of "Louie, Louie" in which I say, repeatedly, "Shimbady-Bimbady-Rimbady-Flop, Diggily, Miggily, Siggily- Dop"...Very similar, I'm sure you agree

Do-Wah-Diddy-Daddy - Wednesday, September 15th, 2004 8:56 PM
Do-wah-diddy is an example of Mouth music. Mouth music is the term used for a class of singing which does not use words. In these cases the voice is normally being used as if it is a musical instrument with the mouth producing timbre and rhythm.
This music tool was used in various forms of traditional music in the Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic, Turkish and Middle Eastern mouth music traditions. Such mouth music existed prior to the 1200s and the First Crusade into Palestine and the city of Jerusalem, possibly even before the year 900.
In other words a string of meaningless syllables

A syllable is a unit of speech that is made up of one or more phones (single sounds or "phonetic segments") and in turn makes up words. It influences the rhythm of a language, its prosody, its poetic meter, its stress patterns, etc.

The general structure of a syllable consists of three parts: the onset, the nucleus, and the coda. The nucleus is usually a vowel or a diphthong; some languages allow consonants like /l/ and /r/ as syllable nuclei. The onset is what comes before the nucleus, and the coda is what comes after it. The nucleus and the coda, together, are sometimes called the rhyme.
That which will carry a melody In music, a melody is a series of linear events or a succession, not a simultaneity as in a chord. However, this succession must contain change of some kind and be perceived as a single entity (possibly gestalt) to be called a melody. Most specifically this includes patterns of changing pitches and durations, while most generally it includes any interacting patterns of changing events or quality. Such as do-wah-diddy-diddy-dum-diddy-doo or ooh-eee-ooh-ah-ah-ting-tang-walla-walla-bing-bang, though it's often improvised Improvisation is the act of making something up as you go along. This term is usually used in the context of music, theater or dance.

In music, jazz and Bluegrass are well-known for using improvisation. It features in many kinds of traditional music, including flamenco, Carnatic music, Pygmy and other African music, and was once an important element in making classical music on the spot.

Or, as Sam said,"If you don't know by now...
Don't mess with it!"

A little heavy on the vocabulary, but cool!
I was fortunate to have played with Sam in "The Vibrations"& the "Automated Sound Society". I was also a fan of "The Atheists". If I never make it back to Springfield, I would like to take this opertunity to say "Hi" to James Isley, Michael Darling, Chaz Blythe, & Ross Rambach.
